Ideally, you’d have a setup at your house. For example, at my home, I have a NEMA 14-50 outlet. But what if you can’t install a charger at your home like this? Maybe you don’t have a garage or live in an apartment complex that won’t install a charger? That’s when you’ll have to go public
At home, depending on your equipment, you’ll likely get Level 2 charging rates. This will get you between 20mi of charge per hour which is around 31kph.
If you don’t want to wait that long, you’ll want to find a DC Fast Charger. Some even call these Level 3 chargers. The most common connector for a DC Fast Charger is the CHAdeMO plug and is popular in both the US and Europe. The last option regarding charging connectors is for Tesla. The Tesla Supercharger could be called a Level 4 charger with the fastest rates available.

With over 1,000 locations across the US EVgo is relatively small but does seem to have decent availability in more urban areas. As far as costs go EVgo offers several plans depending on your needs. When looking at the plan choices, it seemed confusing, especially since they charge based on the amount of time versus the amount of energy.
Next, we have the most extensive charging network provider, ChargePoint. At the station by my house, the rate was $0.35 per kWh which may sound high, but when you consider our peak rates in San Diego are over 0.40, it’s a good deal. In addition to the per kWh rate, they will limit the amount of time you can charge at a station. T
Another popular network here in southern California is Blink. Blink reports over 4K chargers and they do offer fast charging.
A new startup from San Francisco, Volta, is looking to disrupt this market with free charging. The model is based on showing ads on their massive display stations located next to where you plug in to charge.
Tesla owners get some additional options with the supercharger and destination charger networks. The supercharger network is currently the fastest way to charge of any EV. In about 30min you can get upwards of 170 miles, just under 275km of charge.
The supercharger network has over 7K chargers and is prevalent in the US, Europe, and Asia.
For Model S and X owners who purchased before May of 2017 Supercharging is Free. New Model S and X owners that used a referral code, such as ours which you can get at also get free supercharging.
In addition to the superchargers, Tesla partnered with many hotels and malls to offer destination chargers similar to what you can install at your home. These chargers are free for all Tesla’s but often are reserved for patrons of the store or hotel hosting them.
When it comes to finding public chargers, there are lots of options. In my experience the best one is plugshare.

EV Match is another startup in this space is working to help pair drivers and people with chargers. The idea here is that people can share their home chargers with others in an Airbnb fashion where the host receives a small fee for providing you with a charge port and juice for your journey.
So with all these options hopefully you can rest easy when it comes to finding a place to charge.

Am thinking about my first EV purchase (BEV SUV) and scoped out a suitable way to go from the Bay Area to Yosemite and back, I see a few convenient mid-point locations to stop and recharge (CCS DC-Fast). I wanted to ask: can users ever reserve a charging stand? I would hate to roll into Oakdale (for example) and then have to wait and wait if the unit is being used. Thanks.

Tesla makes a Chademo adapter (it costs over $200) that lets you use that. There currently is not an adapter for CCS combo that I'm aware of.

Charging at the mall is much more comfortable than going to a gas station, ev cars run more quietly, there are more charging stations than gas stations, you can charge in the privacy of your own home, its better for the environment, no more emissions tests every few years, less engine problems . EV is the future.

Biggest issue with relying only on public charging is that the public L2 units usually have a 2-4 hour limit. This means that getting to 90 or 100% is difficult ahead of a road trip etc…

I heard that if you buy your Tesla with the Long Range Battery (310 miles) and if you drive less than 310 miles a week you can Charge the battery at a Tesla Charging station 'once a week' AND at 100% and the battery will not significantly degrade performance? Ben thank you I’m a huge fan, I live in an urban area, Bronx NY to be exact, my concern is battery percentage drop during north east winters and I live in an apartment complex with no charging situation. With that said there are many and I mean many charging stations not too far where I live and on my 1 hour commute to work many many options even my boss has a charging station at work that I could use so that’s not my issue. I’m not even worried about street parking and damage I live in NY it’s inevitable it is what it is. My sole concern is the percentage drop during the north east winters… i want a Tesla either pre owned or new model S,3 and or Y… do you know of anyone who has a similar situation and can put me at ease ? Thank you for this video it help me tremendously. I’m that much closer to pulling the trigger with no hesitation but not there all the way just yet…

The problem is people living in apartments. The people that run apartments will not give free charging. That will be the bottleneck problem. Thus ruining the sales of electric cars.
I have heard it is bad for your batteries to use a Tesla supercharger a lot do to its fast charging. If I planed on charging a Tesla overnight, could I change the rate the supercharger charges the battery? There is a supercharger down the street from where I live, it would be nice to park my car there over night but I would not want to use it regularly if there was a chance that it would ruin my battery. I wish what you were saying was true for all US states, but it's not. Tesla only has five superchargers in my state, in addition to that there's only a handful of destination Chargers and PowerPoint Chargers. Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama are just about EV dead zones you can only charge when you're at home, and forget about going on long trips
The problem with EV chargers in San Diego is that most of them, especially in downtown are located inside garages in which you need to pay to enter. Rates vary from $10-$20. That's not including the cost of charging itself. Sure, there are public chargers, but it is guaranteed you will be waiting for an open spot (day time hours).

if you're bored enough just go get some water fountain/lamp post underground wire from home depot 100$ for 150 ft or something cheap….can handle 30 amps up to 600V ie a dryer outlet output
can just double it up or buy 2x gauge to handle 60 amps if you're in a hurry and somehow have a 60 amp outlet/know what you're doing
bury it, put an outlet at the end on your mailbox or w/e (hide it under a fake rock or bush if you have to) and plug it into your dryer outlet. boom 8kw charger 200$ and a bored afternoon? do it at night and nobody will ever know. if you care about safety throw it into some conduit for another 100ish$ to protect from digging.

nothing special, every RV camp has 10's of them. and they didnt pay 10k a pop to put them in.
